EU Commission unveils plans to rescue chemicals industry

On 8 July, the European Commission unveiled its European Chemicals Industry Action Plan, a non-binding communication that aims at boosting the competitiveness and resilience of the sector.

With this plan, the European Commission aims to reverse the decline of the “industry of industries” in Europe, as the region faces ongoing plant closures and chemical deindustrialisation. The plan sets out numerous legislative and non-legislative initiatives for 2025 and 2026, all intended to tackle challenges such as high energy costs, unfair global competition, and weak demand, while fostering investment in innovation and sustainability.
