BAMA's Transport Guide for Aerosols

BAMA's Transport Guide for Aerosols

We are pleased to inform you that BAMA has updated the Transport Guide for Aerosols - 16th Edition (2025).

This guide provides comprehensive and updated information on the safe and legal transport of aerosol products, classified as dangerous goods. It aligns with international regulations and modal requirements for road, rail, sea, air, and postal transport, including UK-specific exemptions and commercial practices.

Key Highlights:

  • Regulatory Framework: Based on UN Recommendations (Orange Book), with adaptations for ICAO (air), IMO (sea), ADR/RID (road/rail), and UK CDG regulations.
  • Classification: Aerosols are Class 2 dangerous goods, subdivided into flammable (2.1), non-flammable (2.2), and toxic (2.3), with specific criteria for classification and packaging.
  • Packaging & Labelling:
    • Limited quantities: up to 1L (or 120ml for toxic aerosols), with relaxed requirements.
    • Full regulation applies beyond these limits, requiring UN-tested packaging, hazard labels, and documentation.
  • Transport Modes:
    • Road/Rail (ADR/RID): Includes tunnel codes, exemptions, and UK-specific derogations.
    • Sea (IMDG): Requires container packing certificates and stowage/segregation compliance.
    • Air (ICAO/IATA): Strict limits and packaging instructions (Y203, Y963), with some aerosols prohibited.
    • Postal: Only toiletry/medicinal aerosols are allowed domestically under strict conditions.
  • Waste Aerosols: Must be labelled as "Waste Aerosols" and follow full ADR/IMDG requirements, with special provisions for packaging and ventilation.
  • Training: Mandatory for all personnel involved in aerosol transport, with specific requirements for air shipments and DGSA appointments.
  • Security: Emphasizes site and transport security, especially for high-consequence goods.
